President’s Walk

16 Dec 2023 @ 9:30 am 5:00 pm

This year’s President’s Walk will take place on Saturday 16th December and will explore the legendary landscape of the Staffordshire moorlands around the Roaches.  Watch out for wallabies, witches and Green Knights.

Meet up below Hen Cloud by the entrance to Roaches Hall (signed) to be ready to set off at 10am. Please park only in the designated laybys – there are more further along the road if these are busy.

The route passes through woodlands and open moorside.  It is fairly high up and exposed to the weather and the paths are rough and muddy in places, so dress accordingly and wear appropriate footwear (maybe bring spikes if it’s icy).  Xmas hats, mince pies, stollen, mulled wine and other festive fare are encouraged.

The walk will be about 12 miles, although there are options to cut it short if the weather is bad.  We will go over Hen Cloud and the Roaches, past Doxey Pool (reputedly haunted by the witch Jenny Greenteeth) to Roach End and then to Lud’s Church, lair of the Green Knight of Arthurian legend. If we escape the clutches of the Green Knight we will continue to Danebridge and back along the Dane Valley, retracing our steps to the Roaches and descending to the road past Rock Hall Cottage, now a BMC hut but once the home of Doug Moller, self-styled Lord and King of the Roaches. For the survivors, Ye Olde Rock Inn at Upper Hulme then beckons.

NB The wallabies seem to have died out, and the Green Knight was last heard of in the 14th Century. But you never know…

PS This is a dog friendly walk so long as the usual rules are followed. eg dogs on leads near livestock and kept under control at all times.

If you are a non member who would like to join this walk please use the contact form to let us know so we can ensure that it is suitable for you.
