Forest Of Bowland

6 Aug 2023 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm

The August walk takes us to Ward’s Stone, the highest point in the Forest of Bowland, and 2 of its neighbours. Great views in all directions.

We start out through fields before heading up onto Clougha Pike. From there we go generally E. over Grit Fell & up onto Ward’s Stone. We descend briefly over heather & bilberry to pick up a track. At the road we’ll cross fields back to the start. We’ll probably see red grouse and curlew on our route.

NB Dogs are banned year round.

Shooting, I’m reliably informed by a gamekeeper, will not start until much later in the month.

Walk distance: 12 miles – This can be shortened to 8.8m but this means missing the highest point of Ward’s Stone and doing some road walking.

The highest point is 561m. The car park is about 280m. We do lose some height at the start.

Meet: 9.45am for 10am start. Jubilee Tower car park, Quernmore (no facilities – use Forton services on M6 before walk or pub afterwards). Free parking.

Map: OL41 Grid ref: SD 543 574

Leave M6 at J33, stay L. & take 1st exit at roundabout, then immediately L. onto Hampson Lane. Follow this to the end, turn R. then 1st L. At the 2nd crossroads beware cyclists coming down steeply from your R. Turn R. up Quernmore Brow and carry on until you reach the tower. Car park is on L.

If anyone wants refreshments afterwards the most convenient place is probably The Plough on the A6, on the L. just before the railway bridge as you enter Galgate (about 1/2 a mile N. of the roundabout at J33).
